Travel Diary: Ilocos Norte, Philippines

If you’re a tourist in the Philippines, Filipino or foreigner, you may want to consider visiting Ilocos Norte. I can give my fair share of things and activities that can be done in Ilocos Norte since I have been there for many times already.

First of all, if you are planning to visit Ilocos Norte make sure you have your own vehicle because each tourist destinations are in distance from each other. If in case you don’t have a vehicle, you can rent a car or book an Ilocos Tour via a travel agency of your own choice. Usually, Ilocos tour can cost you around 7000 pesos-8000 pesos per person (depends upon the inclusion of the tour package).

Even though the temperature in the downland Ilocos Norte is extremely high, everyone can still enjoy touring around because of its breathtaking sceneries and tourist spots like the great stretch of Pagudpud beach, desert sand dunes of La Paz, historical landmarks like Malacanang of the North, and recreational places like Baluarte ni Chavit Singson, to name a few.

Speaking of sand dunes, the Tourism Board of Ilocos Norte really did a great job in maximizing the desert area. In their effort to give a tourist a one-of-a-kind experience in Ilocos Norte, they offered 4×4 Extreme Ride and Sand Boarding.

In 4×4 Extreme Jeepney Ride, 4-6 person can squeeze in the back of the jeepney. The ride costs around 600 pesos per person and takes 30 to 40 minutes.  There are levels of rush in 4×4 Extreme Jeepney Ride-  low, medium and high. Of course, if I were you, I will choose the high level to maximize your money.

So here’s how it works:

While standing at the back and hands on the handles, the jeepney will rush to the high and low parts of the desert that will give you an adrenaline rush and rapid heart pumps. Be ready and make sure you’re holding tight because the jeepney will pass thru the slants and horizontal parts of the desert in its fastest charge. The tricky part is, the more you scream the more extreme the ride will be. There’s also a part in the trip where you will be taken to the beach, which is like the end route of the ride, to relax and feel the lovely view of desert, sand, and sea.

Take note, the ride may give you bruises and body aches.

I am not really sure how much is the cost of Sand Boarding but you may expect a payment of 200 pesos to 300 pesos each person. In Sand Boarding, you will be given a sand board, like surfing board and skating board, to ride on. From the highest peak of the desert mountain, an instructor will push you down the slope.  You can stand up while surfing down, but it is not advisable if you are a beginner, or ride on with bended knees. Balancing is the key to this activity. Losing balance will cause you stumbling in the sand which is another great experience if you will not take it seriously ..”FUN OVER THE SAND”.

These activities are something every tourist shall seek after in Ilocos Norte. It’s time to experience “Middle East” in the Philippines!

Anyway, here is my 4×4 Extreme Jeepney Ride experience. You can judge how extreme the ride is.
